Here are 10 of our favorite ideas for making your home even more beautiful in 2018. What do you think? Which ones will you commit to? Please share your own design and décor resolutions in the comments below.

1. I RESOLVE TO GET ORGANIZED.

Okay, so this one is probably on everyone’s resolution list every year, but why not make 2018 the year that it really happens! Getting organized, eliminating clutter, and donating what you don’t need or want anymore is one of the easiest ways to breathe new life into your home. Whether it’s a closet, a pantry, a garage, a laundry room . . . even just a junk drawer . . . bringing a little order to your life and your home can really make a world of difference.

2. I RESOLVE TO MAKE MY BOOKCASES BEAUTIFUL.

Do you look longingly at the bookshelves in design magazines and think, “why don’t mine look like that?” Well, never fear, you can make your bookshelves look like that . . . even better. It’s not difficult, but it does take a little bit of thought. It’s not about “filling” the shelves. It’s about dressing them, arranging them, decorating them, adding a pop of color, giving them personality. The books are just the beginning.

3. I RESOLVE TO ADD A FEW NEW ACCESSORIES.

Never underestimate the power of a few new accessories to make your room sing a new song. Sometimes it’s the little things that make all the difference and give a fresh and new vibe to a space. Why not add a comfy throw to your favorite chair? Or what about a beautiful vase filled with the season’s best? Candles? Coffee table books? Pillows? A souvenir from your travels? Any or all of these items can bring a 2017 room into 2018 beautifully.

4. I RESOLVE TO CREATE A MORE INVITING GUEST ROOM.

Do you dread having guests because your guest room is . . . well . . . not very inviting? If so, this is the year to give your guest room the royal treatment. Little touches can mean so much to someone staying at your home. Bottled water, a stack of magazines, a basket filled with extras, such as hotel lotions, travel-sized shampoos and conditioners, nail polishes, breath mints, tea bags and a mug, even stamps, are amenities your guests will appreciate very much. Fresh flowers are always a plus and smell good, too! Plush linens, a snuggly robe and extra towels and blankets will make your guests feel pampered. Several good reads on the night stand and maybe a framed picture of your guest and you together are thoughtful finishing touches.

5. I RESOLVE TO FRESHEN UP MY POWDER ROOM.

Since powder rooms are generally on the smallish size, it’s easier to make changes without having to break the bank. Sometimes even a new wallpaper, paint color, light fixture, mirror, or vanity can change the look entirely.

6. I RESOLVE TO DISPLAY ART I REALLY LOVE.

Art is such a personal choice, and you should choose what you truly love, not just what you feel “goes” in your home. In fact, sometimes the contrast between the style of art you choose and your home’s design style can be wonderful. Don’t be afraid to choose art forms other than paintings, too. A stunning sculpture, vintage poster, a metal wall hanging or a collection of porcelain plates can be the perfect way to give your room a punch of personality.

7. I RESOLVE TO MAKE MY HOME PEACEFUL.

Most of us would like our home to be a tranquil retreat; a sanctuary to relax and rejuvenate. The master bath is often the first place we think of when we consider adding some Zen. Even if you can’t afford to do a complete overhaul, adding a few of the following can make your master bath more like spa-like.

* Soft colors in blues, greens, and neutrals wrap the room in tranquility.
* White vanities and chrome fixtures are clean and refreshing.
* Candles and a large soaking tub. Enough said.
* Organic materials, such as stone, glass tiles and pebble floors in a glass-enclosed shower add a natural feel.
* Fresh flowers or green plants bring the outside in.

8. I RESOLVE TO MIX PATTERNS AND COLORS.

Be brave in 2018 and mix it up a bit! Mixing patterns and colors is fun and can really add a healthy dose of interest to a room. Just a few small things to keep in mind: work with the same color intensities, use related colors to tie differing patterns together, and choose obviously different patterns (a stripe with a paisley) so the difference looks intentional. Most importantly, if you love it, and can live with it, that’s all that matters. Have fun!

9. I RESOLVE TO ADD MORE CURB APPEAL.

It’s true, first impressions count. And when it comes to our homes, who doesn’t want to put his or her best face forward. Why not make 2018 the year that you add some extra punch to your exterior. Maybe your front door could use a fresh coat of paint in red? green? blue? orange? What color speaks to you? Adding a few new bushes or some pretty flower beds can really amp up the exterior of a home. Window boxes are amazing, too! There is just something so wonderful about beautiful florals spilling over the sides of window boxes. Benches on the front porch? Urns overflowing with flowers and greenery? A new walkway? Or just a classic black door flanked with stately topiaries commanding in their urns? What would make your home happy?

10. I RESOLVE TO BE FEARLESS WITH COLOR.

Repeat after me . . . color is my friend. If you yearn for a more colorful interior, don’t be afraid. Paint is just paint and can always be redone. And if bold color on your walls is too intimidating, why not try adding some happy hues in a few accent furniture pieces and accessories. Pillows, lamps, and art can easily be changed up if you get tired of them or want more neutrality in your world.
