Diamonds might be a girl’s best friend, but rubies, sapphires and emeralds sure look good on her. Not for the feint of heart, jewel tones, the bold and beautiful hues that mirror our favorite gemstones, are hot for interiors this fall. Say goodbye to summer’s citrusy palette of fresh squeezed orange, refreshing lime, and sunny yellow and say “oh yeah” to sultry reds, enticing blues, luxurious greens and passionate purples. These rich, deep shades on the color wheel are regal and romantic. They stimulate our senses, wrap us in warmth, and make even the smallest space seem like a palace.

Legendary interior designer Billy Baldwin said it best . . .

“There is magic . . . in the deep-jewel-colored room, warm and mysterious, where you discover its many beauties as you sit, seduced slowly.”

Ruby Red

The color of romance, red is passionate and invigorating. It’s a timeless hue that feels at home in traditional, contemporary and rustic environments. In the fall, brighter shades, such as cherry or poppy, give way to deeper reds, such as crimson and burgundy. Pair ruby red with gold accessories, animal prints, and dark woods for an elegant, cozy intimate vibe.

Sapphire Blue

The color of sky and sea, blue is a calming hue, adding harmony and equilibrium to a space. Deeper blue tones, such as sapphire, are noble, elegant and a fresh choice in today’s interior design. Consider adding a high gloss or lacquered finish to walls dressed in this rich shade to bounce light around the room. Balance the intensity of sapphire with pastels, such as blush, light grey, or crisp white, metallic accessories, and accents in lavender or eggplant.

Emerald Green

Nature’s crowning color, green reminds us of the beauty of the great outdoors. It is the color of growth, new starts and rejuvenation and incorporating a dazzling shade, such as emerald, brings your interior spaces to big, beautiful life. Vibrant and opulent, emerald green ups a room’s elegance quotient, whether it’s used full on or in small doses, such as a few perfectly placed pillows. There’s a reason why the Wizard of Oz lives in the Emerald City. It’s an exotic, exciting and gorgeous place to be. Pair emerald green with navy and white for a preppy palette, yellow and pink for a springtime feel or black and white geometrics for a modern take on tradition.

Amethyst Purple

The color revered by kings, queens and a certain Prince, purple is regal, royal and unforgettable. It evokes a sense of calm and healing, balance and patience. It is sexy, sophisticated and can even be a little bit boho. Taken straight from nature, amethyst purple is the vibrant, larger than life cousin to plum and eggplant. Pair amethyst purple with crisp white, deep grey, chocolate brown and black for a sparkling space that becomes a crowning glory in your home.

Did you know?

The Pantone Color Institute along with the estate of the musical artist, Prince, recently unveiled a new custom purple color to honor the late great musician and singer who passed away last April. “Love Symbol #2” is inspired by Prince’s custom-made Yamaha purple piano and will be the official color for his brand.

Hot Pink Topaz

We’re not talking cotton candy here. An intense vivid pink, such as fuschia, has over the top energy and glamour. Hot pinks are exciting and fun used in areas where you don’t spend too much time; think entry ways, vestibules or dressing rooms. And since it is a color that is often perceived as romantic, festive and happy, pink, especially hot pink, is actually really beautiful in a dining room. Pair hot pink with chocolate brown, black, white, mint green and navy blue. Throw in some classic metals, such as silver and gold, and you’ll have a pink powerhouse of a space.
